Would you cover your exposed skin with a nerve agent or pesticide? Would you do that to your children?

Well, you probably are….read on…..

New research indicates that if you are using an insect repellant containing DEET (and almost repellants do), you may well be exposing yourself and your family to a chemical that functions the same way as nerve gas and pesticides when it attacks the nervous system of both animals and insects.

“These findings question the safety of Deet, particularly in combination with other chemicals,” said researcher Vincent Corbel of Institut de Recherche pour le Developement .

DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), was developed by the U.S. Army right after WWII because of jungle warfare experiences suffered by American soldiers and has been used at least 8 billion times since introduced in 1957 to the public.

The reason DEET is used in insect repellent is simple….it works, lasts longer than most other active ingredients and can be applied in sprays, liquids and lotion form. The problem is that research is beginning to show that the way DEET repels is by attacking the nervous system, according to a new study by the journal BioMed Central Biology. In the past it was believed that DEET didn’t harm the insects, but rather repelled them by interfering with their ability to smell and locate human prey. That idea is now under question as researchers struggle to identify the exact means by which DEET works. “We’ve found that DEET is not simply a behavior-modifying chemical but also inhibits the activity of a key central nervous system enzyme, acetylcholinesterase, in both insects and mammals,” said those conducting the research.

Testing performed on cockroaches and rats seems to show that DEET has the same toxic mechanism as organic pesticides, chemical weapons and nerve gasses in which it blocks a neurological enzyme called acetylchilinesterase which causes muscular paralysis leading to death by asphyxiation. In other words, it may be that DEET is in fact an insecticide and could damage the human nervous system.

Even low doses of DEET have been associated with seizures in children and the cumulative effect of long term DEET exposure, especially in the presence of other insecticides which seem to enhance DEET’s negative effects, appears to be dangerous. Considering the U.S. allows the sale of 100% DEET repellants, the possibility of over exposure is very high. By way of comparison, many countries limit the DEET component of repellents sold there to 50% or less. In almost all cases, countries recommend using the minimum amount of the product, to not apply to cuts or broken skin and to avoid the eyes and mouth when applying.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center said that the new findings are consistent with previous research into the risks of DEET. “Deet is a good chemical for protection against insects,” the report said. “But prolonged exposure results in neurological damage, and this is enhanced by other chemicals and medications.” The researchers in the new study suggested that pregnant women and children under the age of six avoid using DEET-containing mosquito repellents. Researcher Abou-Donia went farther, calling for such products to carry warning labels about DEET’s potential to cause neurological harm.

The U.S. government has scheduled a review of DEET‘s safety in 2012.

We here at The Secrets of Eden have developed an all natural, organic mosquito repellant product that has NO DEET or other Questionable chemicals with unpronounceable names. Our product, cleverly named “Mosquito Repellent”, is available in a 4 ounce spray bottle for $14.95.

Two years ago a study published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine” explored the concerns about what happens when sunscreen penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the body.  The article made the case that when sunscreen is used under common conditions, the ultraviolet filters and chemicals in it can cause free radical damage in the skin and, in theory, promote skin cancer.

We here at The Secrets of Eden believe that all natural and organic products are safer and better than those full of unpronounceable chemicals.  We believe that a logical and safe approach to the Summer Sun Tan Season is a combination of using a hat with a wide brim, keeping out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, not allowing yourself to get sunburned and using a suntan oil to revitalize your skin….it’s not just sunscreen.

So what would you like to put on your skin? Here are some of the ingredients in the leading sunscreen products:
Avobenzone,
Parsol 1789,
Helioplex,
Mexoryl.

We don’t have a clue what these chemicals can do for you or to you, but we do know exactly what’s in Coco Jo, our new Sun Tan Oil, and what it can do for you!

Pure Virgin 92 degree Coconut Oil: Which research has demonstrated reduces the risks of atherosclerosis, heart disease, cancer, and other degenerative conditions. It helps prevent bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, as a result of its antimicrobial component, lauric acid, which is found solely in coconut oil and in breast milk.

Golden Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil helps promote healing of the skin in many ways. It has antimicrobial properties, which means it actually discourages the growth of some bacterial and fungal microbes that attack the skin. In addition, the chemical composition of jojoba closely resembles that of the skin’s natural sebum, so it is easily absorbed and rarely causes allergic reactions, even in the most sensitive individuals.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E is particularly important for the protection of cell membranes as well as keeping skin, heart and circulation, nerves, muscles and red blood cells healthy. Antioxidants such as vitamin E protect cells against the effects of dangerous free radicals, potentially damaging by-products of body metabolism and prolonged exposure to the sun. Free radicals can cause cell damage that may lead to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer.  Vitamin e added to lotions, creams, and other skin care products, as well as taken orally, plays a role in the anti-aging of skin. It helps skin look younger by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also, free radicals are believed to play an important role in skin aging and therefore the antioxidant activity is quite valuable for this skin problem.

Aloe Vera: One of the first documented users of aloe vera was Cleopatra, who lived from 68 to 30 B.C. She is said to have used the gel on her skin as protection from the sun, and to have thought the gel helped to keep her skin young-looking. Studies have shown that aloe vera speeds the healing process, particularly in burns, including those from radiation.

Shea Butter: Shea Butter easily penetrates the skin allowing the skin to breathe and not clogging pores.  Shea Butter has a high level of cinnamic acid, a natural sun screen. Shea butter has been used to help heal burns, sores, scars, dermatitis, psoriasis, dandruff, and stretch marks. It may also help diminish wrinkles by moisturizing the skin, promoting cell renewal, and increasing circulation.

Organic Hemp Seed Oil: Skin is our largest and arguably most important organ. Our skin has numerous responsibilities such as temperature control, sensory collection, protection and moisture regulation.  Moisture regulation is carried out through a “barrier” produced by our skin; it is on the surface called the epidermis.

The key to the integrity of this barrier is moisture, specifically keeping water inside the skin. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’S) specifically Omega 6, Omega 3 and Omega 9 preserve this barrier. Hemp seed oil replenishes our (EFA’S), which helps our skin hold moisture, making it a natural humectant. Hemp so closely matches our own skins lipids it is able to penetrate inside our cells and lubricate the surface between them, thus bringing the EFA’s within our body. The effectiveness of our barrier function is what determines the moisture level of our skin, thus the health, softness and smoothness.

Not only does Hemp seed oil contribute greatly to the barrier function and appearance it also has other skin benefits such as offering relief to acne, minor abrasions, psoriasis and eczema. Hemp is also the only plant oil containing Vitamin D, which is necessary for Calcium absorption, especially useful to vegans.

So after a day outside, apply Coco Jo to your skin and help fight the ravages of time and the hot sun.

Chocolate. Dreamy, comforting, exciting, tasty and fortunately, widely available. But is something so good actually good for you? It seems counter intuitive that a food that contains saturated fats which have been shown to cause an increase in low density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol can actually be good for you, but surprise, it is! At least in moderation. Recent research shows that chocolate can help your heart and can make beneficial changes to your cholesterol. Honest!

Fats are either described as saturated or unsaturated depending on the way the carbon atoms are coupled to each other. Saturated fats have been shown to be detrimental to cardio vascular health while unsaturated fats and oils are “hearth healthy.”

Without getting too far into the chemistry of fats and oils, consider the fact that they are both composed of long chains of carbon atoms coupled with hydrogen atoms. Depending on how many carbon atoms there are in the chain and the number and position of the hydrogen atoms, various fats and oils have differing characteristics and as it turns out chocolate has 18 carbon atoms in the chain…and fats containing this particular chemical composition act differently than their otherwise destructively formulated saturated cousins. Suffice it to say this is one of Mother Nature’s wonderful aberrations…a saturated fat that is actually GOOD for you!

And now the research: A study into eight trials that had been held with 215 participants showed that eating cocoa had reduced levels of LDL cholesterol by close to 6 milligrams per deciliter and had also reduced total cholesterol by a similar amount. And the really good news was that people who had additional heart related risk factors, like diabetes, saw a greater decrease in LDL and total cholesterol.

But a few cautions are in order:
Moderation is the key here. Loading up on chocolate reduces or eliminates these cardio vascular benefits and can also cause weight gain because of the natural and added sugars in most products.
People that are allergic to chocolate obviously should not partake.
A slow acting stimulant called theobromine in chocolate can disturb sleep patterns so eat it earlier in the day.

Chocolate is poisonous to horses, dogs, cats and birds so make sure to keep it away from domestic animals. And be careful while landscaping with coca mulch as it is highly toxic to these animals.

Nothing tastes better than a good pecan pie with vanilla ice cream and now scientists have found out it’s not only delicious but good for you!

Laboratory mice fed with a diet rich in pecans were studied in the lab and the University of Massachusetts researchers conducting the study found that this diet had very beneficial effects in protecting the nervous system. They recently published their findings in the current issue of “Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research.” And it looks like this exciting information may have benefits for those who suffer from Lou Gehrig’s disease called ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Antioxidants are contained in food, some essential oils and supplements and act to counter free radicals that damage cells, causing diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, and heart disease. Government statistics put out by the Department of agriculture rate pecans among the top 15 foods for antioxidant levels and for tree borne nut, they are the highest in the world. The ingredient here that does the beneficial work is vitamin E and has been shown to be a potent neurological protector.

The way the test study was conducted was to feed three different groups of laboratory mice special diets containing different amounts of ground up pecans. Since the mice had motor neuron deficiencies due to their breeding and were genetically disposed to nerve disease, measurements were taken before and after they were put on these test diets.

All of the mice showed a decline in motor function, but the ones fed on ground up pecans showed a “significant delay” as compared to the ones fed the placebo diet which had no pecan component. And the level of delay in motor function decline was directly proportional the the percentage of pecans in the diet….more pecans, less decline.

So here’s the good news: you can get more than 19 different vitamins and minerals from pecans. And they don’t contain cholesterol and if they are unsalted, there is no sodium, either. Some of the vitamins and minerals they contain are A, B, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and folic acid.

Harry Hoxsey opened his first cancer clinic in 1924, using herbal formulas that were reputed to have been developed by his great-grandfather. With the help of sympathetic doctors, Hoxsey eventually established, what was in the 1950s, “the world’s largest privately owned cancer center [in Dallas, Texas], with branches spreading to seventeen states.”

Hoxsey’s treatment for cancer is based on an herbal tonic and two topical escharotic formulas for removing visible tumors. Organized medicine does not question the effectiveness of the escharotic pastes and, according to Ausubel, “classifies them as ‘standard’ treatment though one that is seldom if ever used.”

The tonic is another story. Neither the AMA, the FDA, nor NCI ever bothered to test — fairly and scientifically — Hoxsey’s tonic, despite Hoxsey’s repeated requests for such a test and despite the thousands of patients who had regained their health using the tonic.

The government was more interested in closing his clinic down than in evaluating a possible cancer cure. It finally succeeded in 1960. Throughout those 36 years that preceded his clinic’s closure, Hoxsey was harassed by medical boards, the AMA, and FDA. He was arrested 119 times between 1926-1931 for practicing medicine without a license and over 100 times between 1937-1939 after setting up a clinic in Texas. The doctors who worked with Hoxsey faced threats of having their own licenses revoked.

Hoxsey’s cancer claims attracted the emnity of Dr. Malcolm L. Harris, chief surgeon of Chicago’s Alexian Brothers Hospital and secretary of the AMA, and Dr. Morris Fishbein, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Ausubel shows that Fishbein used his long-held position as JAMA’s editor to discredit any therapy that competed with organized medicine.

One of the many incidents that Ausubel includes in When Healing Becomes a Crime epitomizes the power and closemindedness of the medical establishment in its dealings with Hoxsey. In 1947, Tom Chapman, an Oklahoma contractor whose child had recovered at Hoxsey’s Dallas clinic, asked his US Senator, Elmer Thomas, for help. Chapman was willing to finance a test of Hoxsey’s therapy on 25 patients, but neither the Oklahoma Medical Society nor the American Cancer Society would agree to supervise it.

After visiting Hoxsey’s clinic for himself, the Senator asked Surgeon General Thomas Parran to investigate. Parran refused, citing anti-Hoxsey tirades from Fishbein’s Journal of the American Medical Association. For four months the Senator sought a means of gaining cooperation for a test of Hoxsey’s treatment.

Eventually, Senator Thomas wrote Hoxsey: “It seems that the medical fraternity is highly organized and that they have decided to crush you and your institution, if at all possible. I have had a few ’rounds’ with t he heads of all the medical organizations as well as the Public Health Service here in Washington, and it seems that the public officials are afraid that if they make any move, or say anything antagonistic to the wishes of the medical organization, they will be pounded upon and destroyed. In other words, the public officials seem to be afraid of their jobs and even of their lives.”

The AMA did not forget Senator Thomas’s efforts. Ausubel reports that “In the next election, the AMA lobbied heavily against Senator Thomas, and he was defeated….” When Healing Becomes a Crime contains examples of other cancer therapies that have been systematically discredited by the medical establishment with the active cooperation of the federal government, including Krebiozen (derived by Dr. Andrew C. Ivy and Dr. Stefan Durovic from a natural substance found in the liver that is said to inhibit cancer) and Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski’s antineoplaston treatment.

The Hoxsey formulas are still used at the Bio Medical Center in Tijuana, Mexico, which was run by Hoxsey’s associate Mildred Nelson until her death in January 1999. Originally a skeptic, Mildred had joined Hoxsey’s staff as a nurse in 1946, to uncover the ‘hoax’. Her mother had ignored Mildred’s protests and consulted Hoxsey for treatment when doctors had no suggestions for treating a return of uterine cancer. To Mildred’s surprise, her mother, like many other patients that Mildred observed over the months, regained her health. Mildred’s mother died in 1997, at the age of ninety-nine.

When Healing Becomes a Crime includes the stories of many patients who used Hoxsey’s treatment and recovered from cancer. Kenny Ausubel’s attention to detail, his drive to present as complete a picture as possible, and his ability to communicate the real drama of the Hoxsey saga makes When Healing Becomes a Crime a fascinating read.

Where were you in the Summer of ’63?

I know where I was was mentally….on the beach.  I was young, the sun was warm, life was good and my future lay before me with shining promise.  Life was good and needed to be lived to the fullest measure.

Along with Summer came the beach and the surfer music that was popular at the time. My favorites were Dick Dale and the Deltones, The ventures and The Chantays.

What was my favorite instrumental?    ….that’s easy….Pipeline.

That’s why when we decided here at The Secrets of Eden to bring out a suntan oil, these wonderful memories came flooding back….the beach, the sun, the surf and the music.  We named the product Coco Jo…because it contains fractionated and 92 degree Coconut oil and Golden Jojoba…Coco Jo.

Of course we didn’t stop there.  We wanted a product that was easily applied, not greasy or oily, had a crisp light and pleasing fragrance and had healthful emollients to smooth and soften the skin.

We added hemp oil because it contains the essential fatty acids (EFA) we need to sustain life and augment our immune systems.  Exposure to the sun can release free radicals and the EFA content of hemp oil may help to eliminate or reduce these skin aging components.

We added shea butter (unrefined) because it’s  a particularly effective moisturizer and contains many fatty acids, which are needed to retain skin moisture and elasticity. Shea butter has been used to help heal burns, sores, scars, dermatitis, psoriasis, dandruff, and stretch marks. It may also help diminish wrinkles by moisturizing the skin, promoting cell renewal, and increasing circulation. Shea butter also contains cinnamic acid, a substance that helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Shea butter protects the skin from both environmental and free-radical damage. It contains vitamins A and E, and has demonstrated both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

We added Aloe Vera for its well known burn healing, inflammation fighting and healthful properties.

We added vitamin E because it fights wrinkles and destroys free radicals.  Vitamin E penetrates the epidermis and makes sunscreens more effective while helping minimize pigmentation age or “liver” spots.

We added a crisp, clean essence of peach because we are tired of all suntan oils smelling the same.  We wanted an essence that wouldn’t overpower yet spoke of summer sun.

And finally we added “Beez” Wax as a binder and emulsifier to keep all the other ingredients in suspension and because Bees Wax is known to enhance the effectiveness of sun screen and prolongs the amount of time Coco Jo stays on the skin so you don’t have to apply it as often.

So SURF’S UP!  Turn up your speakers, put on your sandals, grab your surfboard and a bottle of Coco Jo and head to the beach!   See you there!

What is Acai Colon Cleanse?
An Acai colon cleanse is a way to detoxify the colon and get rid of those toxins that can cause some troublesome health issues. Toxins multiply in the colon-picture a pyramid-that just builds and builds until there’s simply no more room.

Many people suffer from constipation which can lead to straining and consistent constipation can cause hemorrhoids to develop. Keeping the body free from waste matter is only one reason to make sure the colon stays cleaned out on a regular basis. You want to keep the body as healthy as you can – it’s the only one you’ll get.

The word “toxin” translates into poison. When your colon holds onto toxins, you’re walking around carrying poison in your body – poison that you can easily rid yourself of and have a healthy colon. A way to keep the colon healthy is by using an Acai colon cleanse.

Methods of detoxifying like Acai colon cleanse work in harmony with your body in a gentle way to give you a healthier bowel. If you’re wondering whether or not you’d benefit from using a cleanser, all you have to do is check out the ingredients in the foods you eat. You don’t want those unnatural ingredients to stay in your system.

What Are the Top Colon Cleanse Benefits?
Not only can you eliminate harmful bacteria and toxins, but you gain other colon cleanse benefits, too. If you’re like most people, you understand what it’s like to swing from one extreme to the other.

Sometimes it seems like you battle constipation to the point that you know you have to do something about it. Other times, you might suffer from bouts of diarrhea that interfere with your day-to-day plans. Both maladies can cause abdominal cramping and make you feel extremely nauseated.

It’s true that a colon cleanse benefits people who struggle with either diarrhea or constipation, but it’s the extras that convince many people to become regular users of the products.

Getting rid of the buildup of waste is a huge benefit to cleaning out the bowels. Chronic constipation is thought to increase the risk of developing colon cancer. If you also have a family history of the disease, that means you’re at an even higher risk.

For some people, other colon cleanse benefits besides simply keeping constipation at bay are a deciding factor in using the product. It’s not unheard of to lose weight after using a cleanse because the colon can contain several pounds of old feces. Not only can it rid the body of those pounds, but it can also help the body be able to use food more easily, and it can give you added energy and result in better looking skin, too!

How Does a Weight Loss Colon Cleanse Work?
A weight loss colon cleanse isn’t a quick fix to weight loss. What it is, however, is an important step in the process of losing weight and getting fit. All you have to do is sit on a bench outside of a restaurant and count the number of overweight people heading in or leaving the establishment.

The sad truth is that there are more overweight Americans than healthy ones. This can be attributed to family history – we learned to eat or overeat during our early years because food is seen as a way to celebrate life. So we learn early to associate our body’s fuel with emotions.

A weight loss colon cleanse helps put your digestive system back on the right track to weight loss success. When you’re overweight, habits are hard to break. If you’re used to coming home and relaxing in front of the television with sugary soda, a bowl of chips and chasing that down with a sweet treat, you’ve conditioned your bowels to accept the unhealthy choices.

What can I do to get my cleansing and weight loss program started? The first step you should do to change the outcome is to break the habit of eating in front of the television. This is the leading cause of mindless calorie consumption.

The next step is to use a weight loss colon cleanse to get rid of the toxins you’ve allowed to clog up your intestines. Once you break the cycle of bad eating habits and start purifying your body, it’s easier to make better choices for a brighter and healthier future.

While there are several ACAI products on the market, none are more effective than The Secrets of Eden ACAI Rapid Weight Loss Combo.

Until recently, muscle mass body building has been a male dominated sport. That does not necessarily suggest women have not been serious players as well, although men’s bodybuilding has been the norm.

This is because male bodies organically make a significant volume of testosterone. Testosterone produces the capacity for longer, more intense physical exercises and body building.  This interest in muscle tissue developing is a healthy impact of competitive male pursuits.

While the effects of testosterone have been widely known for years, what has recently been learned is the role of Nitric Oxide in muscle performance.  The Secrets of Eden has developed NITRO as a product that enhances the level of nitric oxide thus helping build muscles.

Insider Guidelines and Assistance for Men:

  • Start off your workout period with a 5 to ten minute stretching and warm up, and finish by cooling off for another five minutes.
  • And then in between, make your workouts fairly brief. Your average sessions shouldn’t exceed 30-45 minutes. Over and above that, your body will begin to use energy that draws from your muscles themselves, consequently inhibiting optimal progress – obviously not your end goal.
  • To enable you to adhere to your planned strategy, find out if you are able to find an exercise partner who has muscle development targets much like yours and arrange workout routines with each other so you can inspire one another to not skip training and also to sustain a wholesome diet and sleep structure.
  • Additionally, put together an exercise record in which you record your progress, body weight improvements and lift modifications.
  • Focus On All Your Muscle Groups.
  • Concentrate more upon essential routines or mixed moves which work several muscles at the same time. Good examples include the dead lift, bench press, barbell curl, squats, military press, and bent-over row.
  • Complete roughly 8 to 12 sets of exercise patterns for each session. Dividing distinct muscle groups between various days each week – in addition to muscle isolation exercises – should actually only be attempted after working out for a few months when you shift into a more advanced level.
  • Do not overlook any essential body area all through the course of your muscle building. Some body builders for example, have ignored building up legs and calves and instead concentrated only on the upper body – then they subsequently rue having disregarded those other parts.
  • Set Aside Time for Rest to Build Substantial Muscles:
  • One of many essential expert secrets for productive muscle development is understanding that even though the usefulness of a workout depends in large part on how much stress you put on your muscle groups, a useful strategy furthermore necessitates significant off time from muscle mass developing exercise.
  • Permit your muscle groups no less than a couple of days rest between muscle building sessions, or you can focus on various muscle groups on alternating days if you visit the gym every morning.
  • Heading for the health and fitness center too frequently can lead to overuse of your muscles – probably more a temptation for males than females – consequently countering muscle tissue improvement and overall success.
  • If you are uncomfortable the day after working out, take at a minimum one full 24-hour interval of rest before exercising again.
  • Though men routinely find it tough to believe, it is actually during those occasions of rest subsequent to doing muscle building exercises that your muscle tissues realize their greatest progress.

In addition to the above, the responsible use of natural non-steroidal supplements can be a part of any body building routine.  The Secrets of Eden has developed several that have proven to be useful for athletes of all types and genders:

NITRO: Nitrogen Oxide blood flow increasing formula.

V-6:  For Male and Female Enhanced Performance and Enjoyment

DHEA: Nature’s Super Body Building and Age Defying Formula.

ACAI Energy Boost: Increase energy without the use of stimulants or expensive canned drinks.

As a Golden Gloves boxer in my youth (that’s where I got the slightly remodeled nose I now sport) I learned many of these lessons, but I didn’t have the benefit of today’s technology.  The Secrets of Eden has developed a muscle enhancing all natural product called Nitro that can help you in your body building by helping increase blood flow to exercised muscles.  This increased blood flow helps move out the lactic acid that is the byproduct of exercise (and part of the cause of sore muscles) and also aids in bringing fresh nutrients to the muscle, providing accelerated recovery to rebuild and restore vital pathways.

And as a side note, Nitric Oxide is the active agent in Viagra.

‘Til Next time,

Rick

With the change to Daylight Savings time, some of us still can’t get a good night’s sleep.

People and other living animals have what’s called the Circadian Rhythm.   In short,we have an internal biological “Clock” that regulates when we feel sleepy and when it’s time to wake up.  And unfortunately when Daylight Savings time rolls around each Spring and the clock is moved forward one hour, this can play havoc with our normal sleep.

This disruption of our biological clock is also directly related to Jet Lag, the condition where moving from one time zone to another disrupts sleep and causes us to feel fatigued and confused.  Interestingly, in the Fall when the extra hour of sleep occurs, most people have no problem adjusting and when you fly from West to East, the time transition is far easier for most people to adjust to.  You can learn more about this natural phenomena by going to Web MD here.

The question is, “What Do You Do about It?”

We have several answers and the place to begin is with some simple steps:

  • Exercise regularly.  Exercise helps tire and relax the body.
  • Don’t consume caffeine after 4:00 p.m. or so. Avoid other stimulants like cigarettes as well.
  • Avoid alcohol before bedtime. Alcohol disrupts the brain’s normal patterns during sleep.
  • Try to stay in a pattern with a regular bedtime and wakeup time, even on weekends.  By maintaining a regular pattern to your sleep cycle you are maximizing the natural circadian rhythm.
  • Sun light has a lot to do with sleep.  Try to maintain a dark bedroom during the entire sleep cycle.
  • The older you are, the less sleep most people require.

Now that you have optimized the items above, here are some natural remedies that might help, too:

  • Melatonin.  Research has shown that Melatonin “is effective in alleviating the symptoms of jet lag.”  Research has also shown that Melatonin is safe with short term use.  We offer the product as “Natural Sleep.”
  • Valerian.  While some research has failed to document the efficacy of Valerian as a sedative, anecdotal observation has and Valerian has been used since ancient Greek and Roman Times. It was used during the Second World War to calm the nerves of British citizens during the air raids of the Battle of Britain.  We offer Valerian in the one ounce size as “Valerian Tincture.”
  • Serenity.  A blend of essential oils, Serenity combines 5 of the oils of the Bible into one product.  As the name implies, when applied to blood points or deep breathed, Serenity calms, relaxes and helps promote sleep.  We offer this proprietary product as Serenity 15 ml.
  • Sleep.  This is a blend of 12 essential oils in a base of Shea Butter, Pal Kernel and our Special Secrets of Eden 92 degree Coconut oil.  Secrets of Eden Sleep is a special formula developed by Pastor Strawcutter after researching the available literature and considerable trial and error testing.  A very popular product, we sell Sleep in a 4 oz. size that will last the user for several months.

We hope this information will be valuable to you….I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t occasionally suffer from a restless or sleepless night.  When that happens, we hope you will turn to The Secrets of Eden for natural homeopathic remedies and solutions.

Until Next Time,

Rick

Heart Disease: How can you minimize the risk of heart disease?

Fact is, most Americans are already familiar with some of the basic recomendations:

Keep your cholesterol under control. Ideally your total cholesterol should be under 200 and your HDL (“Good Cholesterol”) should be 35 or more.

Eat Less Fat. (or Drink MORE Red Wine?)

Red Wine Cuts Cholesterol

Red Wine Reduces Bad Cholesterol

Doctors have long wondered why the French with their high saturated fat diet suffer less heart related issues than other nationalities. This has given rise to what has been called……… The French Paradox.

According to data, the average French person consumed 108 grams per day of fat from animal sources in 2002 while the average American consumed only 72. The French eat four times as much butter, 60 percent more cheese and nearly three times as much pork. Although the French consume only slightly more total fat (171 g/d vs 157 g/d), they consume much more saturated fat because Americans consume a much larger proportion of fat in the form of vegetable oil, with most of that being soybean oil. However, according to data from the British Heart foundation, in 1999, rates of death from coronary heart disease among males aged 35–74 years were 115 per 100,000 people in the U.S. but only 83 per 100,000 in France.

Some have suggested that the high consumption of red wine in France accounts for the difference and after 60 Minutes aired a broadcast in 1991 expounding this hypothesis, the consumption of red wine in America rose by an astounding amount.
Researchers have isolated the active ingredient in red wine, called Resveratrol, and now it is available in Resveratrol capsules or concentrated form as Cardio-Vino. Proponents of these products point out that there is no alcohol in either of these forms so they can be taken by anyone at any age without fear of the potential negative effects of the alcohol.

Don’t smoke.

Keep your blood pressure under control. The normal range is 120/80 or lower. High blood pressure can injure the lining of arteries allowing cholesterol to gather at the injured site and triggering a blood clot.

Lower your table salt intake…and increase your intake of calcium and potassium rich foods. Bananas, orange juice, dates and potatoes are rich in potassium and dairy products are rich in calcium. Get regular exercise. The January 8, 1998 issue of “The New England Journal of Medicine” published the following:
Background The potential benefit of low-intensity activity in terms of longevity among older men has not been clearly documented. We  examined the association between walking and mortality in a cohort of retired men who were nonsmokers and physically capable of participating in low-intensity activities on a daily basis.
Methods We studied 707 nonsmoking retired men, 61 to 81 years of age, who were enrolled in the Honolulu Heart Program. The distance walked (miles per day) was recorded at a base-line examination, which took place between 1980 and 1982. Data on overall mortality (from any cause) were collected over a 12-year period of follow-up.
Results During the follow-up period, there were 208 deaths. After adjustment for age, the mortality rate among the men who walked less than 1 mile (1.6 km) per day was nearly twice that among those who walked more than 2 miles (3.2 km) per day (40.5 percent vs. 23.8 percent, P = 0.001). The cumulative incidence of death after 12 years for the most active walkers was reached in less than 7 years among the men who were least active. The distance walked remained inversely related to mortality after adjustment for overall measures of activity and other risk factors .
Conclusions Our findings in older physically capable men indicate that regular walking is associated with a lower overall mortality rate. Encouraging elderly people to walk may benefit their health.
